The Wijde Wellen

The special boulevard of Harderwijk is called the most beautiful boulevard in the Netherlands. A beautiful promenade has been added to this boulevard: The Wijde Wellen. A promenade with a user-friendly and unique character.

De Wijde Wellen is more than just a walking path along the water of the Wolderwijd. It offers the opportunity to enjoy a route with panoramic views at various seating areas, each with its own character. You won't find that anywhere in the Netherlands, only in Harderwijk. A unique combination of staying, walking and cycling between the water and an ancient city wall.

The beginning of the walking path forms a direct connection with the promenade and is located at the Beachhotel Monopole. Opposite this hotel, a large wooden platform is being created that will serve as a terrace, podium and meeting place. You can enjoy the view while lounging in a 'hammock' above the water.

A slender balcony that rises above the water offers a wide view over the water, the distant polder, the passing ships and the water birds. The height of the balcony refers to the highest water level ever reached by the former Zuiderzee. A path cut into the water leads to the bottom of this former bubbling water, which offers a view of the water at the level of swans swimming past.

Dog owners can use the special dog walking beach that is located directly on the walking path. A special beach has also been created for the elderly where they can enjoy the view and nature in peace.

Three undulating dunes lead cyclists and pedestrians to a varied area with special nature. There you will find a natural pool for nesting swallows, a green riparian zone with purple flowering loosestrife, foraging waterfowl, colorful dragonflies and a twelve-metre-long piece of landscape furniture that seeks to connect with the water through the greenery.

In summer, winter, autumn and spring, nature takes its course here for centuries. Modern shapes framed by the history that the Wijde Wellen carries with it.

The aim was to use our knowledge and skills to make a plan within a target budget and to give this a plus with the available money. How do you make the landscape fun and how do you entice people to go hiking there? We came up with ideas to make that place even more interesting.
